DIY- Do-It-Yourself Steampunk Furniture

The Steampunk style of furniture is an inexhaustible source of inspiration, delving into the personal realm of imagination of each creator, merging the past and the distant steam-powered era of industrial growth, and the future from the perspective of the steam age, which can be fictional yet so suggestive that it outlines a simultaneously warm (steam) and cold (steel) world.

When a DIY project is so good you might think at first glance that this desk is factory-made. This desk was an antique piece of furniture from the Art Deco period, found in a second-hand store. Karla, the owner of faded_orchid_studio, creates what makes her happy and goes wherever inspiration leads.

While working on this desk, Karla used the following products:

  • Tobacco Road Voodoo Gel Stain (Dixie Belle Paint Co)
  • Caviar chalk mineral paint (Dixie Belle Paint Co)
Black washed using a ‘fumed’ technique (heavier on edges, blending inward)
  • Decoupage paper: Grunge Metres Decoupage Tissue Paper by Roycycled
  • Gilding wax (Dixie Belle Paint Co)
  • Gold, Bronze, Copper

Karla started her social media page five years ago when she decided to offer her work for sale. She has always enjoyed antique collecting, thrifting, and creating/customizing furniture for her own decor on a budget. Before social media, there was a lot of trial and error, but since then, Karla has learned so much from all the creators on many different platforms.  She finds inspiration from so many places but it always starts with the piece she is working on. Karla assesses the general condition, how much of the original wood can be restored, what all needs to be hidden, and then, to her, the most interesting way to hide imperfections in accordance with the period of the furniture. She finds the Art Deco era, with all the curves and interesting elements, really lends itself well to fun steampunk art.
